2024 Preseason Men's Basketball All-HBCUAC Teams, Team Rankings Revealed
NEW ORLEANS - October 9, 2024 - The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) presents its 2024 Preseason Men's Basketball All-HBCUAC First and Second Teams and Preseason Team Rankings, as voted on by the conference head men's basketball coaches. Points are derived by the order each coach ranks the players and teams.
After dominating the conference last season as a freshman, Jamal Gibson of Southern University at New Orleans was picked to continue his reign as the 2024 Preseason HBCUAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year, garnering 51 votes. Averaging 21.0 points, 15.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game, Gibson set SUNO records for total points (630), rebounds (474), and double-doubles (29). Gibson's accolades include GCAC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, as well as selections to the NAIA All-American Third Team and the Louisiana Sports Writer Association All-Louisiana Third Team.
Making up the rest of the first team are:
Raymond Reece of Philander Smith University: Averaged a double-double with 16 points and 10.3 rebounds per game; An All-Defensive Team and First Team All-Conference Selection
Tory Cargo of Dillard University: Averaged 15.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game; 2023-24 First Team All-Conference Selection
Antonio Patterson of Tougaloo College: Averaged 12.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and two assists per game.
Tyon Thompson of Southern University at New Orleans: Playing at Fisk University last season, earned Second Team All-Conference; averaged 14.6 points 6.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game
Jalil Langston of University of the Virgin Islands, Demarius Pitts of Wiley University, Armond Williams of Dillard, Amorey Womack of Philander Smith and Michael Ashley of Fisk earned Preseason All-HBCUAC Second Team.
The HBCUAC also released its 2024 Preseason Team rankings, which were also determined by the head men's basketball coaches. Philander Smith University, which won the 2024 GCAC Men's Basketball Championship and finished runner-up in the regular season is the favorite to take the title, amassing 140 points and four first-place votes. Tougaloo College, who won the regular season title, finished second with 129 points and gaining four first-place votes. Talladega College, which advanced to the semifinals, earned 116 points, Dillard University which reached the final of the GCAC Championship, followed with 113 points and two first-place votes. The Hope Credit Union 2025 HBCU Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships will be hosted by Visit Tuscaloosa at Stillman College for the second consecutive season with all 13 schools competing from February 25 until March 2.
