Philander Smith's Whitfield, Wiley's Hurd win Week 2 HBCUAC Men's Cross Country Weekly Awards
NEW ORLEANS - September 9, 2025 - Philander Smith University's Maurice Rue-Whitfield claims Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week. Wiley University's Earl Hurd Jr. took home Freshman of the Week. The men were recognized for their performance between September 1-7, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Rue-Whitfield ran 18:46.33 at the Lyon College Invitational on Saturday. He finished sixth out of 30 runners.
Hurd Jr. led the Wildcats at the University of Texas at Tyler season opener. He finished the eight-kilometer course in 30:07, competing against NCAA Division III runners. Hurd ran at a 6:03 mile-pace.

The HBCU Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) is the only HBCU conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
